Abstract:
Hazard can be described as a situation that can lead to harm. Such situations
happen due to accidents in the industry. Hazardous conditions pose safety and health
impacts within the working environment as well as in the environment outside the
plant. These impacts vary from near misses to loss of lives. The current status or the
extent of the industrial accidents occurs in Sri Lanka lacks understanding. When
looking at industries in the industrialised countries one could see increasing efforts
being made in understanding causes of accidents and instituting remedial
Many accidents in the process industry that the world has experienced in the past have
occurred repeatedly. These occurrences are lessons from the past and must not be
forgotten in order to avoid disasters from happening in the future.
In the process of becoming an industrialised country, Sri Lanka would need to
develop some measures in managing process industrial hazards. A compilation of the
data regarding accidents that have happened in the past would facilitate analysis of the
accidents and understand the type and nature of accidents occur in this country. It
would help us to determine the current status of accidents in Sri Lanka. Further, this
Accident Database would be a valuable source of information in using the lessons
from the past to avoid accidents in the future.
