Impact of the concept of traditional spaces on modern urban domestic architecture in Sri Lanka

Abstract

In this study an attempt is made to examine the impact of concepts of tradition spaces in modern urban domestic architecture in Sri Lanka. The first , part of the first chapter will be developed to survey very briefly the development of domestic architecture which one of the primary needs of the mankind. The second part of the same chapter tries to analyze the life styles and the concept of space in Sri Lankan architecture. Most important space areas such as verandah, pila court yard will be studied. The second chapter is devoted to gather the results of case studies. Each case study will be summarized in an inform pattern, which includes sub divisions' on aspects such as location, plan-form, special articulation and special characters. The third chapter will analyze the impact of the concept or traditional domestic architecture on modern urban houses. This impact is to be seen prominently in space articulation, climate controlling and selection of appropriate materials. Each aspect will be separately dealt with. The study will be concluded with a summing up after the third chapter.
