Abstract:
The structural forms used for rectangular and circular reservoirs have been reviewed, It is shown that although the rectangular form with buttresses and tie beams gives an efficient arrangement, it has a poor performance when the temperature of the water stored fluctuates. The circular structures with arched walls spanning between counterforts are efficient only with respect to walls; the massive counterforts acting as cantilevers are not efficient structurally. Suitable modifications have been suggested to overcome these problems and also to result in more economical structural forms that would need less concrete and reinforcement.
