The Street as an architectural entity: an examination of the concept and the strategies used to balance the livable attribute of a street with that of the conveyor attribute

Abstract

Much attention has been given to the concept of space in architecture and it has been subjected to greater discussion among theorists and philosophers who claim various concepts in the theory of architectural space. Since remote times man has thought about space and made his own lived in world by arranging spaces .Architectural space is the space created by man for his living. An architectural entity can be defined as space created by architects ,Arranging and articulating masses. It contains a center an enclosure and continuity. In The same manner a street can also be perceived and experienced as an architectural entity. An enclosed street can be considered as a three dimensional space in the same manner space as inside a building. Articulation of spaces in streets and the progression of these will create livability and movement of a street. Because street should be both a livable place which makes people stay, as well as a conveyor which makes people move. This study thus concentrates on the importance of the designed street and intends to emphasize the street as a space which should be designed architecturally .Therefore it hopes to see the street in relation to the concept and the theories Under pinning the design of a street. Finally, it emphasizes the importance of a designed street to enjoy it as an architectural space especially when considering the time people spend on streets, and its ability to affect people emotionally.
