Architecture, urban design and planning become the key words in the studies of urban built environments. Planning matters at initial stages of development proposals and the policy formulation for the city design .Physical design comes in to the existence either as a product of architecture or as a product of urban design. It is the physical design that matters for the average man's understanding whereas structuring and identifying the environment while orientating himself with it is of vital importance to human existence. Therefore the creation, preservation and maintenance of distinctive character in human environments is of great importance. Architect whose responsibility goes beyond the design of an individual building must acknowledge tile issues of urban environments whereas he may put considerable impetus on designing for the sustainability of urban environments. Thus Studying architecture with urban design may be effectual for tile architect's involvement in creating of better urban environments. Urban design in its approach to the physical design makes a clear distinction between the artistic design traditions and the social usage approaches whereas latter is becoming more realistic in the developing countries. "Orchestration of spatial progression" which is a design principle in architecture as a social usage approach to the urban design is expected to be studied in this dissertation over the artistic design traditions in urban design by doing a comparative study with two selected urban examples in Sri Lankan context. The study proves the probability and most appropriateness of principles a social usage design approach in urban design and its inferences are given in conclusion as a set of guide lines for the creation of better urban environments. |
