dc.description.abstract The water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) has been classified as an obnoxious freshwater weed in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world due to its rapid growth rate and asexual reproduction. In Sri Lanka widespread infestations occurred since its introduction to the Botanical Gardens in 1904. However it is reported that the aerial tissues (i.c. stems and leaves) of water hyacinth could be effectively utilized for biogas production under anaerobic conditions. en_US
