dc.description.abstract The foundry industry has a major role to play in the economic development of our country. Unfortunately in Sri Lanka the technological development of this industry has stagnated. The quality of foundry products manufactured in Sri Lanka is not up to the competent level with international market. Through a structured questionnaire survey it was revealed that one of the most significant quality parameter of the castings such as ornaments, door and window fitting etc is the surface roughness. Presently the surface roughness of the castings is measured by using JISB0659 surface roughness gauge. But it is not an advance scientific method as the sensitivity and the accuracy of this method is not up to the satisfactory level. The most common and standard method used for measure the surface roughness is stylus profilometry. But this method is not suitable for measuring the surface roughness of castings with complex shapes. en_US
