- item: Conference-AbstractThe timeless way of building(1987) Sri Nammuni, VIf we accept that the only worthwhile building is building that is architecture, the title borrowed from Christopher Alexander (CA) contains within it as astounding amount of wisdom which keeps unravelling greater depths the longer one contemplates on it. This phrase of CA is pregnant with such meaning that one is lead to speculate on the insights that may have ensued if the thinking of CA met on some fertile ground the wisdom of Ananda Coomaraswamy (AC) before the original thoughts of both were robbed of their, verility by the likes of us.
- item:The Sri Lankan tradition for shelter(1987) De Silva, NimalThe tradition is the opinion or belief or custom handed down from ancestors to posterity. The tradition is not static, it is the product of the functional demand adopted with the nature and environment, flavoured with culture and belief. It was developed with certain value systems, anything that was not acceptable to the society was gradually rejected, only what was proved useful for people were retained and adopted. The outcome of confidence and the human satisfaction experienced by the ancestors, formulated and precipitated the tradition. Today it is assumed that the ultimate objective of modernizing development is the urbanization and industrialization. In a country like Sri Lanka with a rural population of more than 80% one must be careful in formulating development policies. The result of inappropriate development policies which assume that increased agricultural production is synonymous with rural development, Where such policies are based on large scale, capital intensive agro-industrial projects, there may be serious disturbance to existing settlement patterns

- item:Buildings Vs. Architecture(1987) Sri Nmmuni, VIn both instances there is understanding and sympathy for the wronged professional. For, although the doctor is in overall charge of the physical well-being of the patient (and the politician, the management of the society) there is instant recognition that many of the secondary responsibilities of this task have been delegated to various other agencies. Neither the doctor nor the politician is thus unduly worried (and therefore minds his own business) and live to worry on the day their essential business (and therefore their specific responsibilities) are found to be un attended to. This seeming selfishness, as Ayn Rand would explain, has its merits. Worry, when selfish, focusses examination on the essentials and therefore, hopefully, on the specific role of the professional. This is how professions evolved and are strengthened and their role more clearly defined and shortcomings overcome
- item: Conference-Full-textCost control in Architectural design(1987) Wedikkara, CIn the design and construction of buildings today the building clients demand that greater attention be paid to cost efficiency in design. This need tor financial control and the building to be completed within, a definite time and cost frame work is due to, continually rising cost of building, restraints in the money borrowed and high interest rates, all making effective cost control that more important.
