Abstract

“Architecture is the masterly, correct, and magnificent play of masses brought together in light. Our eyes are made to see forms in light: light and shade reveal these forms.” (Corbusier, 2013) “Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody.” (Jacobs, 2016) This paper explores the impact of daylight colour variability on the visual perception of a small urban space. It is based on selected spaces of Piliyandala town, Sri Lanka. This dissertation consists of three chapters. The first part suggests an introduction to the project’s main areas with a literature review. Chapter two identifies research parameters and chapter three finally comes up with analyzed outcomes of the research. A chronological analysis can explain the impact of daylight colour variability on visual perception in a small urban space. It could be described as a variation of visual perception. The research combines in-situ spectral measurements of daylight (spectral power distribution, CCT, and illuminance) at various times and key conditions with photographic records and controlled colour rendering comparisons. In addition to physical measurements, on-site surveys and perceptual observations will collect user’s qualitative perceptions (Ex. Perceived warmth, safety, appearance, and legibility. In Sri Lanka, urban areas are currently evolving through the adoption of innovative theories and emerging technologies. This research focuses on studying the spatial arrangements of daylight variation in urban settings and observing their determinant impacts through an analysis of urban characteristics. By analysing landscape visual angles, building characteristics, and the overall morphology of selected urban spaces, the study explores how variations in daylight contribute to changes in the perceived quality of these environments. In conclusion, this explains the positive and negative impacts of daylight colour variability on visual perception in a small urban space through Piliyandala, Sri Lanka. Urban designers use this visual light quality to design their urban spaces. It can also be found that socio-urban functions are transitioning from space to space through their own experience. Colour changes in urban environments can be recognised and concluded based on all of the fundamental causes of daylight. It primarily enhances the imageability of the urban area and introduces appropriate observational methods that are closely connected to the surrounding environment. When designing urban spaces, these parameters must first be examined to analyse how colour variability influences visual perception. Based on this analysis, designers can then determine the most suitable colour ranges for each space in relation to its environmental temperature and conditions. These observations are designed to assist architects, landscape designers, and planners in developing climate-sensitive, human-friendly public areas that improve living conditions in urban areas.
