dc.description.abstractIn this study, Housing in Kolonnawa was examined end it is estimated that by 2001 the number of housing units required would be about 12,000. The two major shortage of housing problem being confronted in this rcspoot, is the low average household, incomes and the high level of unemployment in this area. In the prooess of having assessed the magnitude of tho problem, we have found out the existing housing stock end the future needs and their ability to pay end we have tried to show by example on the two cities selected, tho first, tho upgrading of an existing and, the scoond, on an abandoned swampy land, how we could achieve our goals on these sites mainly through involving tho prospective occupiers with housing process A summary of the Sections would he as follows Seotion 1, is an introductory ohapter whioh states the purpose of the dissertation, which is to take the Kolonnawa area work out detail housing proposals for two typical problem areas within the context of the overall housing problem. Section 2 donlo with the general characteristics of the Kolonne.war area, and touches on the topography of the area, the major land uses and communication patterns. It also summarizes a Ward to Ward analysis of Kolornewe highlighting the major deficiencies stress factors In Section S, the magnitude of the problem has been assessed as regards the existing housing stock and the future housing needs. It also analyses the ability to pay for housing of the future occupiers Section 4, deals in depth the availability of land in Koftannawa and and the selection of the two sites, the first for an upgrading of an existing settlement mid the seoond, new development on an abandoned marshy land. Section 5, states th goals and objectives to be achieved for the development of housing, which is mainly to involve the low income group in the housin process, the maximisation of the ure of available resources particularly that of labour which is freely available; the provision of water and toilet facilities to each household and to provide each household? with reasonable access as amenities such as trao.port nd employer. Section six deals with the development of new ito st Meototamulla Road, station the objectiver and the procors to the adopted. Section 7 deals similarly with the Allabomal latumbura site for upgradig of an existing settlement.Section 8 states the role of project places, in overall housig programme of kolonnawa. Section 9 gives a rough economic feasibility of the two project examples, so x as to indicates the viability of providing housing for the poor. Section 10 - A concluding chapter giving the exiator situation and proposals.en_US
