In this paper the principle of operation, implementation and performance of an integrated circuit based electronic energy meter are described. Comparison is made of the performance of the electronic energy meter with that of the conventional electromechanical energy meter, on various loads of different power factors. The results suggest that the electronic energy meter performs better on non-linear loads, while the conventional meter performs better on linear loads. However, more accurate measurements eliminating as many errors as possible should be done before reaching any conclusion about the performance- It is suggested that a data logging system using a computer be used for more precise collection of data in further testing of the meter performance.en_US
