The studies were based on the analysis of long term daily rainfall data purchased from the Department of Meteorology. The data basically covered the period 18S5-1998, although in certain instances there were records with some missing data. Appropriate adjustments were made where essential. The data were chosen so that the different climatic zones of Sri Lanka were incorporated into the study. Accordingly, the meteorological stations of Galle and Ratnapura (wet zone), Kurunegala (intermediate zone) and Puttalam, Anuradhapura and Hambantota (dry zone) were selected.en_US
