Blending of different types of fatty oils is becoming popular in surface coating industry due to flexibility in obtaining better performances. The synthesis and evaluation of the physical properties of long oil alkyd resins synthesized using soya bean (Glycine max) oil blended with karawila (Momordica charantia) seed oil have been studied. The physical properties; iodine value, acid value, saponification value, refractive index and color of both oils were determined. Both oils were suitable to synthesize long oil alkyd resins as acid values and the iodine values were less than 3 mg/g and 135 mg/g, respectively. Different proportions of karawila seed oil (w/w% 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50) were blended with soya bean oil to synthesis alkyd resins using pentaerythritol and phthalic anhydride as the other main constituents. Significant variation in transesterification time was observed for the oil blend with 30% karawila seed oil. Similar behaviour was also observed for the specific gravity. However, the other physical properties; viscosity, colour, clarity and non volatile matter varied proportionately without significant variation. Since karawila seed oil contains a high amount of eleosteric acid, the extent of polymerization at incipience of gellation was decreased.en_US
