During the last decade there have been considerable developments in the field of mathematical modelling and its applications in the study of coastal aquatic systems. This paper summarises current developments in mathematical modelling of coastal aquatic systems and identifies appropriate teaching methodologies. The paper arises from collaborative activities undertaken by the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Moratuwa and Hydraulics Research, Wallingford, U.K., on a Higher Education Link sponsored by the British Council. The University is presently seeking funding to implement a project on the introduction of mathematical modelling and teaching methodologies. This paper has been prepared jointly by the University of Moratuwa and Hydraulics Research, Wallingford.en_US
