Understanding how end users experience a building and evaluating its performance are essential for linking design decisions with actual operational behavior. This study investigates how architectural design influences user experiences and performance at Manning Market Complex in Peliyagoda, Sri Lanka. Using a qualitative approach, data was collected through observations and semi-structured interviews with market users. Thematic analysis identified patterns related to building performance and user experiences. Results showed architectural changes caused social, environmental, and health challenges, impairing its function as a market. Five themes emerged i.e. (i) operational contradictions, (ii) support issues, (iii) environmental vulnerabilities, (iv) architectural–functional misalignment, and (v) waste/hygiene problems. The building's design poorly responds to Sri Lanka's tropical climate, causing heat, rain disruptions, and discomfort. Its high-roofed structure and environmental features conflict with market needs, while waste management issues hinder hygiene and operations. Overall, the study reveals that current architectural solutions fail to meet market needs, negatively affecting user experience and performance. The findings highlight the need for user-centered and context-aware design in future markets.
