Abstract

Every journey into research begins with curiosity, a question, and the willingness to look beyond what one already knows. UNBOUND Freshers’ Perspectives brings together selected work produced by students of Batch 25 through the Library and Information Skills Programme conducted during the Pre-Academic Term of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Moratuwa. The contributions in this inaugural volume emerged from the Information Literacy assignment, My First Research Project, which introduced students to some of the essential practices of academic inquiry. The assignment required students to engage with an engineering or design-related topic through systematic information searching, the use of library resources and academic databases, source evaluation, academic writing, referencing, reflection, and collaborative work. Students were also expected to explain their chosen topics in their own words, draw upon relevant sources, organise their ideas in a coherent manner, and demonstrate responsible academic practice. The pieces presented in this magazine emerged from an evaluation process involving 110 submissions, of which 32 were selected for final evaluation. The final evaluation considered the relevance and clarity of the selected topic, the students’ understanding of the problem, use of research sources, authenticity of writing, organisation and coherence, and the depth of discussion and synthesis. And 14 were selected for publication These writings should be read as the early work of students at the beginning of their undergraduate journey. Their value lies not only in the topics they explore, but also in the process they represent. Through this experience, students began to encounter research as a practice of questioning, searching, evaluating, interpreting, connecting ideas, and communicating evidence with care. The title Unbound reflects this stage of intellectual growth. Entering university opens new possibilities for thinking beyond familiar boundaries, questioning assumptions, and approaching problems from different perspectives. For future engineers, such habits are closely connected to their ability to investigate problems responsibly, communicate ideas clearly, and make informed decisions. This publication is also the outcome of a collective effort. We gratefully acknowledge the Library, the Faculty of Engineering, the coordinators, academic staff, mentors, reviewers, and all those who contributed to the Pre-Academic Term and supported the students throughout this process. Above all, we acknowledge the students whose work, curiosity, and emerging perspectives have made this first volume possible. We hope that UNBOUND Freshers’ Perspectives will serve not merely as a record of an assignment, but as a record of a beginning. May it encourage students to continue asking worthwhile questions, seeking reliable knowledge, communicating responsibly, and developing the intellectual independence that will shape their future as engineers and designers.
