dc.description.abstractThis thesis aims to address the critical challenge of optimizing the operational lifespan of aging transformers within the Sri Lankan Power System. Through a multidisciplinary approach, incorporating mathematical modeling, environmental analysis, and cost optimization techniques, a comprehensive framework for transformer management is developed. The primary objective of this research is to extend the operational life of aging transformers while maximizing loading, and cost efficiency by adjusting cooling fan group settings. To achieve this goal, the study begins by investigating the aging process of transformers and identifying key factors influencing their lifespan. Calculations are done to quantify the effects of temperature, moisture, and oxygen exposure on transformer insulation aging. These findings are integrated into mathematical models, which accurately predict transformer lifetimes based on environmental conditions and operational parameters. Moreover, a cost optimization model is developed to assess the financial implications of different combinations of fan settings and loadings, encompassing maintenance costs, energy consumption, and potential savings. By considering these factors holistically, utility companies can make well-informed decisions regarding transformer management and retirement, ultimately leading to substantial cost savings and improved operational efficiency. The results of the study demonstrate the effectiveness of the cooling fan group settings in extending transformer lifespans, increasing the loading and optimizing costs. Sensitivity analysis is performed to understand the varying impact of input parameters on model outcomes, providing valuable insights for future research and optimization efforts. In conclusion, this thesis contributes significantly to the field of power system management by providing a practical and data-driven approach to transformer management. The developed framework ensures the reliability and sustainability of power systems in Sri Lanka and beyond, thus laying the groundwork for enhanced operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness in the management of aging transformer.
